The Lifestyle “face” of Instagram is known to everyone.
But are beautiful photos of a “perfect” life or an exotic vacation all that? No! Meet the lesser-known meme side of Instagram.
Instagram has been with us since 2010. ! People like to publicly share photos of their daily activities, so this lifestyle app has gained popularity in a short period of time and is not losing it despite the arrival of a new popular medium – TikTok. It also proved to be a great sales platform. It is mainly on it that we observe modern influencers in every possible field. There is a widespread belief that Instagram is only for sharing beautiful photos of the “perfect” life, exotic vacations, pictures of food or cute pets. Tips for marketers include how to create such aesthetic content and which popular influencers and celebrities to follow on a regular basis. However, there is also another side to this application that is worth watching to stay up to date with what is happening on the web. It may prove equally inspiring for your brand.
Memiar side of Instagram
Although memes have been circulating on the web long before Instagram, it is this medium, which is mainly used for picture communication, that allows them to be shared quickly and reach a wider audience. One of the more famous “meme” profiles in Poland is Make Life Harder, which has been parodying posts by popular lifestyle blogs since its inception (first on Facebook as early as 10 years ago!). Subsequently, it became a “mine” of memes on Instagram and even a social media outlet. Although MLH do not insert pretty pictures, but mainly ironic and mocking content, they have many observers (already more than 700 thousand!), among whom there is no shortage of celebrities. Robert Makłowicz himself, the hero of the memes often shared on MLH, said recently that he loves them (I guess there can be no better recommendation ?). MLH fans are very engaged – they like to start and end their day by watching memes and funny pets on stories, and they enjoy participating in absurd but exciting games such as choosing the best mayonnaise (the perfect advertisement for the winner ?) or the best Christmas dish. MHLs have a very large reach and tremendous impact. When they share on their profile, for example, a fundraiser for a failing shelter with debts of PLN 100,000, after an hour the entire amount is collected, and after three hours its…three times that amount! So it’s worth keeping up to date with this profile. But that’s not the only place to find the freshest memes.
There are many other profiles on Instagram that share funny, often ironic content, and they are watched by many (tens to hundreds of thousands) people. Usually accounts are divided by subject. On some you’ll simply find images inspired by everyday life, while on others you’ll find “mockery” of celebrities or the “corpo.” There are also memiar profiles with humor that mainly students will understand, or with absurd content and 90s-style graphics. “made in painter.” Instagram is also an ideal, even natural medium for satirical artists and cartoonists – their works are finally finding a wider audience and buyers. In addition, there are many foreign memiar profiles. They are worth watching because memes circulating on the web in English are often later converted into Polish. How do you use this for your brand?
Not everyone likes photos or advertisements that show an idealized world. Such audiences will be reached by a more humorous message, which also has its place on Instagram. And some companies are taking advantage of this. An interesting example is the foreign water brand Liquid Death created, among others. By former Netflix creative director. The water is sold in cans resembling those of beer. Their ads definitely stand out among those for other products on the same shelf (and other products too ?). The brand’s account on Instagram is full of mismatched and unsightly photos and videos. If there are any models to be found, they are tattooed or made up like Zombies. They also post photos and videos from fans who creatively open cans of Liquid Death, and crown a sip of water with a juicy… burp. The brand also works with influencers to promote hydration during hot weather and engages in environmental protection, but does so in a very ironic, ridiculous and decidedly unsightly way… We should add that the company does not complain about a lack of customers and revenue.
Popular memes and absurd humor are also used by Polish brands. One company has released a series of ketchups with the aforementioned Robert Makłowicz, whose amusing image appears on the packaging. Another brand opted for an absurdist commercial reminiscent of the 1980s in style, where a well-known actor plays the “king of hand washing.” In turn, one of the catering companies on social media advertises an unusual influencer… a black monkey who shares his thoughts on food with users. There are also brands that simply upload posts to Instagram in the form of memes. Others engage the aforementioned profile makers and satirical cartoonists. So the possibilities are almost endless! So it’s worth keeping up to date with what’s happening on this less obvious side of Instagram as well, in order to create content tailored to your specific target audience.
